Studytober 2025 - In Closing

Another year, another art challenge.

I started out with an optimistic outlook with this challenge. Truth be told, prior to starting the challenge I was already feeling rather insecure about my art. Mostly it was the result of something missing or something I felt I was doing wrong... But I could never figure out what it was.

Intertwined with this was a sense of inadequacy towards my art. Since early 2023, I had never felt more confident in my skills when I made art with my current rendering style. Over the course of the next two years I slowly developed it, and I was proud of what I made as a result of that. But now, as I've told friends and others, I feel like I have hit a glass ceiling with my art. I found myself looking at the artists whose art styles I have been inspired by, and I couldn't help feeling that I'm still miles behind where I truly wanted to be.

My art style was supposed to be a combination of styles I admired, but somewhere along the way I developed something else entirely. While it's not necessarily a bad thing that I created something that ultimately became my own style, what I developed wasn't the ideal that I pictured myself having. And it started to feel... Wrong. It was so much that I wanted to learn a wholly different painting style just to make myself feel better over that.

An art community I joined pointed out I needed to improve on my lighting, so I started making strides towards that. After a while, my self-esteem took a hit to the point that, for the first time, I felt emotionally distraught towards my art despite all the effort I had put in towards learning up to this point. Perhaps, in some way, it is because of that very effort that made it all the more painful to bear. The pain was so immense that I couldn't find myself speaking to my regular friend circle without feeling some volatile emotion from being reminded of that.

I took time to reflect on what was happening with myself. I realized how bitter I became about art for reasons beyond just the disparity between the art style I had and the ideal I wanted. Beyond that, I felt like I just wasn't doing as well as my peers were for whatever reason or another. I was happy for them, yet I would be lying if I said I held no envy towards them over it. Somehow it felt like I was in my teens all over again—did I ever really change from who I was or did I just become better at wearing a faΓ§ade of confidence about all of this? I didn't know, but the whole experience left me feeling hollow and empty over art.

Despite everything, I'm still aware that I need to keep moving forward (and maybe I need to get rid of Bluesky and Twitter for good πŸ˜…). As a silver lining, I am thankfully now able to put a proper description to the new art style I want to master: the use of hard brushes to define a figure's light and dark values. I want to continue working towards being able to create more art with said painting style. My hope is that by zeroing down especially towards my lighting studies, I will be one step closer towards achieving the ideal art style I've always wanted to have.

As a part of this process I... Unfortunately needed to distance myself from certain circles and friends. I want them to know that should they be reading this, I'm still okay, I still value my friendships with them, and I'm just going through a bunch of things I need to just let happen. It's eviscerating for sure, but I'd rather not jeopardize relationships over pain I have yet to fully move on from.

Thank you to everyone who has been supportive of me and has stayed with me through the course of my art journey. Although my outlook on art currently remains bleak, there's solace in knowing that there will always be people who support me, even if they're all a scant few. For that, I'm grateful. Truly.

Female Hips Sketches 2

More female hips practice. I think I have a better grasp of their general shape and form on this one compared to the last attempt.

Back Sketches 1

Attempting back sketches from some reference photos. I wanted to continue on the same vein of sketching parts of the body that I still feel shaky with, and apply what I learned on my last entry. Now that I think about it, I rarely ever make anything that involves the back of the character facing the viewer.

Female Hips Sketches 1

Taking a break from lighting study for now. I was thinking of tackling something related to anatomy for today, and decided to just tackle female hips. Trying to just make myself more comfortable in drawing this region of the body because I'm oftentimes either hiding it under clothing or drawing upper body sketches.

Lighting Study 8

More lighting exercises from Murry Lancashire's Form Lighting. This involves adding texture on a 3D model and using the way the tone changes on the shape as a guide for the lighting.

I had to stop halfway though because I had been lingering on this more than I should have for a few days. I think I'll come back to it later though.

Lighting Study 7 + Zephyr (2025)

Lighting studies but I used my OC Zephyr to do it. Had to redesign her armguard though, and I'm much happier with how it looks now compared to before.

Lighting Study 6

Lighting study using one of the exercises from Murry Lancashire's Fundamental's Series: Form Lighting.

Basically it involves taking a cube and sculpting it into a shape with values on the sphere. I decided to just sculpt a regular vase after making a basic sketch of it.

Lighting Study 5 + Terra Sketch(es) 3

Lighting practice but with Terra as my model. Well, my design of her, at least.

I feel more confident about her anatomy here compared to the one a few days ago.

Lighting Study 4

Lighting studies, but with my hand as reference.

I think I'll be hyperfixated with lighting for the rest of this art challenge, at this point.

Lighting Study 3

Still keeping the crosshairs on lighting studies. I took a further step towards working with something more basic than yesterday by using spheres and cylinders to understand lighting. I've been watching both this Marco Bucci video and this Lighting Mentor video that were recommended to me by a friend and they've been helping me move more towards the right direction... Hopefully.

Lighting Study 2

More attempts at lighting studies. I was struggling to decide on what subjects to practice on today, and for the last one I settled ultimately for Ramza, since I have his Bring Arts figurine just on display beside my tablet. πŸ₯°

Lighting Study 1

I recently joined an art group and after they gave me some feedback on some of my art, I was told that I needed to broaden my understanding of lighting. Lighting is certainly something I struggle to understand immensely, and they pointed me to something I could read up on to understand this furtherSo I've indulged in simply trying to understand more of it through these shapes, though I couldn't help being curious and applying the concepts onto a human bust at the end. πŸ˜…

I was also striving to render more comfortably in this lineless art style again, but make further strides towards a style similar to that of concept art in Guild Wars 2. I realized I could attempt to do this by softening the edges of the darker areas with a soft round brush. You can see this effect at the bottom row of the image.

Gold Rendering Study

Was digging up more tutorials and decided to try painting gold today. This art challenge was definitely a good opportunity to finally get to some of these. My brushstrokes were pretty lazy but looking at things from afar these actually aren't too bad 😎

Composition Sketches - Portrait

I have a bunch of ideas drifting around in my head for future art pieces. I figured this was a good opportunity to sketch some of them on paper and create these composition sketches.

Surprisingly, I ended up indulging in art pieces that involved more characters than backgrounds... πŸ˜…

Terra Sketch(es) 2

Indulging in another Terra sketch because oh my god the new Dissidia for mobile has been announced and she looks so cute...

I wanted to just stick to a simple sketch but one thing led to another and now it has color and (sloppily added) cel shaded rendering. Like all the rest of the Studytober art pieces so far, this isn't particularly a serious work, though I am not proud of how much time I invested in it (at least 5 hours). And now it's almost 6 a.m. Good lord.

Anyway, I'll definitely have a more serious Terra art piece soon... I hope...

Nature Landscape Studies 1

Ugh, it's been a while since I jumped into anything related to landscapes... This was such a itch I enjoyed scratching.

For the first image, I used this tutorial as a reference and wanted to recreate it. The second image is from a reference photo I took of Mike Lake at Golden Ears Provincial Park in Canada. The third image from a reference photo from Numata, Okayamachi in Japan.

Trees: Rendering 1

Been focusing too much on anatomy so I thought it would be a good time to change things up a little bit. I was looking through some of my saved pins on Pinterest for a couple of tree references and attempted recreating a few of them. I'm not really liking that last one over there if I'm being honest with you... πŸ˜…

Nose Sketches 1

Going back to more fundaments... Though I admittedly started later than usual for Day 11.

Noses are definitely up there on my list of things I struggle with. I'm going to have to come back to doing more practice sketches again at some point.

Terra Sketches 1

Man. I haven't drawn Terra in ages. It's definitely a breath of fresh air seeing her in my style today compared to before. I should dredge up my old Terra sketch from the early 2010's. It's probably sitting locked away in my old dA account  vault somewhere.

I was actually supposed to do another set of eye sketches, because me and a friend thought it would be funny to look at it like the eye-mouth-eye emoji combination (an inside joke between us). But I was feeling uninterested in drawing more eyes after I finished with mouths, and I decided I wanted to indulge in some fangirling and draw Terra after seeing all the fan art of her flooding my Twitter. πŸ₯°

Apparently there's a hashtag called #1ζ—₯1γƒ†γ‚£γƒŠ that's gone viral and it's everyone and their dog posting one art piece of Terra everyday. I figure it's because October is also her birthday month so that's a thing. Not gonna lie though, I am eating good with all the Terra content... But I thought I'd also want to add in my contributions. πŸ˜‹

This also turned into a bit of a study on hair and bangs again, in addition to putting my previous study of eyes to good use. I would have loved to make more for this post, but I ended up being pressed for time at the end of the day. I settled for just four sketches of her for now; I'm very keen on making more again some time later in the challenge.

Mouth Sketches 1

Yesterday I was focusing on eyes, so today I focused on mouths next. πŸ‘„ Nothing really groundbreaking, but I'd like to have my characters to have more expressive faces when I sketch them.
