As promised, have another preview of my work:
Menos was honestly the hardest character to paint in the whole project. Although it was easy to make his muscular build look detailed in pencil sketch, it was initially very difficult for me to do that in Pixelmator. I had entered the contest with the intent of only coloring in my characters' basic colors and then a flat layer of shading.
After a while I got restless, especially when I saw artwork like this. As simple as it seemed, it really wasn't for me; I wanted to know how to achieve the effect I wanted and make him look more detailed.
Then I remembered the smudging I did for my Drifter fan art, which I learned from this post on Pinterest:
This muscle tutorial would become a major turning point for me during the entire project. And after some experimenting, I achieved the detailing I wanted, as you can see from the first image above.
I also used the same technique with the other characters… Such as Kuro.
The next problem I had with Menos was the huge brace around his neck. Officially, it appeared to be made of metal, but I wondered if it was made of stone too. Then I discovered the Noise tool, and I managed to make the brace appear it was made of stone.
I preferred this because of how detailed it looked. I did the same with Kuro's wrist accessories (not sure what you call that…),
